Sweet Tapes Thoughts…
One thing I’ve been really appreciating about pop music lately is how it sets a distinct soundtrack to suburban op shops. I frequent opportunity shops for the thrill of meeting possibilitY. I find myself travelling through retro-isms of decades past evolving into futures. From genderless garments to eclectic knick knacks, ageless toy dreams and colour coded domestic goodies, I feel such a deep tactile interest and joy in the museum like experience of browsing second hand histories. Then to ground me in the present of the year of our Lord 2022 - I chuckle to myself whenever my ears perk up 4 funky contemporary reworks of old tunes I have loved and known since I was a kid - like Big Energy by Latto x Mariah Carey x DJ Khaled. Or realising how every generation will have their angsty equivalents of f*** you anthems directed at an ex-lover.
Pop music is the ultimate remix tool, it is a gathering point for the wishing well of time and life gone by - for all of its imagined truths and romanticised pasts. Across many cultures, pop music holds a vital key to community relationships and gathering. To bond over what is popular, what is familiar and fondly recollected. Pop music connects us in such deep and surprising ways. Like, if we had never met before I am certain there is at least one pop song that can create a bridge between your memories n mine - and well, I just think that’s kinda beautiful, ya know.
